Bed Bases

When it comes to beds, there’s a variety of terms that are used to describe the different types available. When the term ‘bed base’ is used, it’s usually referring to beds where the bottom of the bed looks like a ‘box’, rather than appearing to be on legs and raised off the floor. 

Whilst that’s a simple explanation, it’s essentially what separates a bed base from a bed frame. Also, when the term ‘base’ is used, the bed usually doesn’t include a headboard. Once a headboard is included, this makes it a bed. 

Bed bases are available as either divan bed bases or ottoman divan bases and what separates the two is the type of storage space included and how you access it. Divan bed bases include drawers for storing your belongings, which can be configured up to four drawers depending on your chosen bed base size.

Whilst ottoman bed bases feature a gas assisted mattress platform that can be lifted to access your storage space. They are available in either side opening or end opening variations, much like regular ottoman beds. You usually get more storage space in an ottoman bed base due to the storage space equalling near enough the entire footprint of your bed. 

Fitting a headboard to your bed base doesn’t have to be a difficult job. It’s certainly something that anyone who’s comfortable with carrying out a little bit of basic DIY will be able to handle. We’d certainly always recommend having a bed base of some kind for your mattress to sit on. Whether that’s a bed frame, bed base, a divan bed or ottoman bed. Placing your mattress directly on the floor may save you money in the short term, not needing to buy a bed of some kind, but the disadvantages certainly outweigh that positive, especially in time.

Without a bed base to support your mattress, you won’t be taking advantage of its full potential and all the benefits it could be bringing you. Your mattress won’t be adequately supporting you and by placing it directly on the floor, you run the risk of mould growth underneath the mattress. Plus it’s much more difficult to get down and back up again when it’s time to sleep and wake up when your mattress is on the floor. Over time this can put additional stress on your muscles, bones and joints, which is something you want to avoid. 

A high quality bed base that’s been manufactured with care and quality materials should last between 7-15 years depending on the materials it’s constructed with and how you care for it. Divan bed bases come in two pieces. To connect them, simply align the sections and attach the clips or brackets at the corners. This will keep your base steady and prevent any movement.
