Since the New Year, we have had a wide range of questions from customers about our headboard range.  We craft all our headboards at our Yorkshire factory, and work hard to provide useful knowledge and info for customers on our ranges where we can, with information on buying advice on fitting.

We’ve covered some questions about headboards in the past, but wanted to dig into more detail, as they’ve been especially popular so far this year.

Our headboard specialists have gone ahead and put together this useful FAQ from customers most common questions, with key information about headboards in buying, selecting and planning your next bedroom addition.

Why is a headboard important to have?

There are a number of reasons why you should have a headboard on your bed frame. The first reason is that it adds design to your room and a sense of comfort.

Headboards come in different shapes and sizes, and with our upholstery service at Next Divan they also come with different fabrics and colours.

What is the purpose of a headboard?

Headboards are a very useful addition to your bed frame and also to the general home!

They offer your bed frame a sturdier experience and also protect your walls from bumps and scrapes that it may otherwise experience without a headboard in place.

Way back when, before we had central heating, headboards were originally used to keep the draft out. Having a constant draft would ruin people’s sleep.

Whilst the purpose of a headboard on your bed has changed, they have always remained a useful accessory for any bedroom and bedroom makeover.

Can I just change my headboard?

It is possible to just change your headboard yourself. There is no science behind the headboard!

Of course, we appreciate that many people may need assistance with changing your headboard round. With that in mind you can view our assembly guides created with our customers in mind.

If you were to purchase a lovely headboard from the Next Divan range, all of the necessary equipment to fit your headboard will be sent to you. Feel free to contact us if you have any queries regarding your headboard purchase and change round.

Can a headboard fit onto any divan bed?

Divan Beds have a specific type of headboard that fits onto them. They are known as Strutted Headboards which are stocked on the Next Divan site.

Strutted Headboards feature struts at the back that can be easily applied to the back of your bed frame. Ensure the size of your headboard is compatible with the size of your bed frame.

If you need more information on our Strutted Headboard range, feel free to contact our customer service team.

Can you fit a headboard on an ottoman bed?

You can fit a headboard onto an Ottoman Bed. The best choice for an ottoman is the Upholstered Headboard.

Pick and choose the colours and fabrics to give your bedframe a sense of style and design it may not otherwise have.

Again, ensure that your headboard’s size is compatible with the size of your bedframe.

If you need more information on our Strutted Headboard range, feel free to contact our customer service team.

Does a headboard have to be the same size as the bed?

How high should a headboard be above the mattress?

This is another question that's answer falls down to personal preference!

For a general guideline though, double size headboards are around 14 inches off of the mattress, then for queen and king they usually sit 28 - 60 inches off from the mattress.

If you need a hand with specific measurements either pre purchase or after your purchase, feel free to contact us and we are happy to assist.

Should a headboard touch the floor?

We can give you a definitive answer on whether or not a headboard should touch the floor. The answer is absolutely not! Here’s why…

Dust and dirt will build up fairly easily underneath with how close it gets to the floor. This makes it harder to clean and maintain. A real headache if you have pets and little ones running around.

You also lose out on the sufficient amount of support that a headboard should bring to a bed frame. Make sure to always have a good understanding of the size of headboard you are working with and the size that will fit the best onto your bed frame.

Does a headboard have to be placed against the wall?

Ideally you will put your headboard against a wall. Sleep experts around the world for some time now have suggested that you place your headboard against the wall.

We recommend at Next Divan to try to keep your headboard away from any doors, or walls that are against the other side of your e.g a hallway, relatives bedroom etc.

When in use, headboards can be fairly loud as they are there to provide more support to your bed frame. Keeping them away from others allows for a good night sleep for all of those who live in your home.

How do I choose a headboard?
