Overheating as you sleep becoming a problem? Our cooling foam mattresses may be the answer to your problems.

There is nothing worse than being woken up due to overheating! It affects most of us, some people more regularly than others, and it massively affects quality of sleep leaving you feeling sluggish and tired the next day. Switch up your sleep health for the better, with the help of a Next Divan mattress.

How does overheating affect our bodies whilst we sleep?

A National Sleep Foundation study has proven that the ideal body temperature for the best possible sleep is 18°C. Our bodies regulate its own core temperature as we sleep, to keep it naturally low. Our bodies' temperature slowly increases as a wake up call towards the end of our sleeping period. It can be difficult to keep our bedroom at the best possible temperature for our sleeping body, if your room is too warm it can interfere with the natural body regulation process. Overheating in the night is more likely to wake you up, as your body tosses and turns as a natural way to attempt to cool down the body, leading to frequent waking.

Bedding also plays a huge factor in overheating. In the UK we tend to bundle up in cosy duvets and throws to get us through the cold winter period, but when summer comes this causes a huge problem for overheated sleepers. A great idea would be to purchase two duvets, one with a 4.5-9 tog for summer and another with a 10.5-15 tog for winter. Checking the current tog on your duvet and purchasing a tog more suitable to your body’s temperature regulation, may be a good place to start to resolve your overheating issue.

In our previous blog, we discussed the effects of bed sheets and linen on our sleep health and skin, and we discovered that synthetic sheets are a leading cause of overheating. The National Sleep Foundation recommends switching out your bed sheet to a natural material such as high-quality cotton or bamboo. These materials are much more breathable and airy than synthetic fabrics, aim for a 200-400 thread count for a cool, dry night's sleep.

There are so many other factors that can lead to an overheated night's sleep, such as medications, hormones and infection or illness,  it may be worth looking into these if nothing seems to ease your sleep overheating problem. Overheating is a main factor in sleep loss and is something to seriously consider when it comes to improving your sleep health and quality of life.
