How to get out of bed when all you want to do is snuggle up

With the winter coldness drawing in, it’s becoming increasingly harder to have the energy to get out of bed in the morning when all you want to do is snuggle up for 10 more minutes! In this week’s blog, let’s explore the ways in which we can help you get out of bed on time, and feel refreshed!

Sleeping habits during the festive period

During the time where cosiness is in the air, and all you want to do is cuddle up in the duvet with a hot chocolate, making it so much harder to get out of bed in the morning. The main factor in the sleepiness you may be experiencing during this time, is due to your body's natural production of a hormone called melatonin. As the days become shorter, your sleeping cycles become massively disrupted and the lack of sunlight you are now experiencing makes your body produce the melatonin hormone.

So it is totally natural to experience extra tiredness throughout this time, as it is your body's natural reaction to this time of the year.

What can you do to help this?

As the production of melatonin is causing this natural reaction, it is important to step into the light which automatically tells your brain to stop producing melatonin. You can do this by simply sitting in a well naturally-lit area, or going for daytime walks when the light is at its highest.

Introduce a little caffeine into your life, such a coffee! Coffee is a really great way to add a spring in your step and give yourself a natural boost without affecting your body in a negative way. However, we advise you to avoid unnatural energy drinks, as these can be high in sugar and affect your stomach and dental health.

It’s also vital that you are getting the correct amount of sleep throughout this period. Sleep professionals suggest 7-9 hours of sleep is absolutely vital, anything under this amount can cause detrimental health issues such as high blood pressure, heart attacks and even strokes! However, too much sleep can cause high risks of diabetes or even heart disease.

If the pressures of the festive period, combined with the production of melatonin and the cold weather, are really taking their toll on you, you can always take a good old power nap!
