Prepare for Black Friday with a little story time

Black Friday, it is almost that time of year again! It feels like only yesterday that we were cashing in on the same great deals in time for the festive season. Black Friday is a great opportunity to stock up for Christmas presents and seasonal winter must-haves, at amazing, one-off affordable prices. In this week’s Next Divan blog we will be exploring the history behind this money-saving event and a sneak preview of our exclusive offers to come!

The History of Black Friday

Black Friday was a term founded by the Philadelphia Police in the 1950s when the traffic police began struggling with masses of traffic jams and intense overcrowding in the downtown retail stores. Black Friday is always the Friday following Thanksgiving Day in the USA, and marks the first official opening day of the Christmas Shopping Season, which was the reason for masses of traffic incidents that led to the nickname of “Black Friday”. The first time the term “Black Friday” was officially used was in 1966 as a collectors stamp in an issue of The American Philatelist.

Worldwide retailers today take little recognition of the unrelated origin of the term, however, continue to use it as a sales jargon for their highest revenue day of the year. In 2019 alone, online retailers reached a record sales amount of $7.2 Billion, which was up from 14% from the previous year.

Black Friday was more helpful than ever in 2020, with a huge increase in job losses and personal finances plummeting amongst people worldwide due to the global pandemic, which still has an impact on life even now. Black Friday sales were at their highest deduction rate ever last year, giving the people of the world a chance to get their seasonal gifts at huge discounts!
