In this guide, we present our chenille fabric guide, explaining what it is and how to take care of it.

What is chenille fabric?

Chenille is a relatively recent invention which dates back to around the 18th century. Believed to have originated in France, it is typically manufactured from cotton, although it can also be made using acrylic, rayon and olefin. It is created by placing short lengths of yarn, known as the pile, between two core yarns followed by twisting the yarn together.

The edges of each pile are then positioned at right angles to the yarn’s core, which gives the fabric its pleasingly softness. This process also explains its characteristic appearance, which changes according to where the fibres catch the light.

Upholstering with chenille

Chenille is a highly versatile upholstery fabric, which can also add a sumptuous look and feel to your bedroom. Better still, as it is especially hard wearing, it is ideal for upholstering your bed or headboard, which will receive sustained compression on a daily basis.

Of all the fabrics we use in our products, chenille boasts one of the widest varieties of colour schemes. To view our full range, check out the fabric options alongside each product on our website.

Care and maintenance

As with any fabric, there will be specific dos and don’ts you will need to follow to keep your chenille upholstered bed or headboard in peak condition. You should also remember that different types of this material sometimes require distinct cleaning methods. So, first of all, we strongly advise you to check the manufacturer’s instructions beforehand on a product label or guidance booklet.

While chenille is a durable fabric, it does tend to shrink when exposed to water and other liquids. For this reason, you should carry out regular vacuuming, brushing the upholstery with a very soft upholstery brush to loosen dirt and debris beforehand.

If the fabric is stained, clean the affected area with a damp white cloth as soon as possible to prevent any stains from setting in. Make sure you don’t rub the stain or overly soak the cloth. Then, dry off the dampened spots, first by dabbing with a dry white cloth followed by applying a hairdryer on a low setting.

Unless recommended by the manufacturer, avoid solvent- and water-based cleaning products. For thorough all-over cleaning, why not hire a professional upholstery cleaner every few years.
